LEGO Ideas: Grand Piano – Powered Up – set 21323

Today LEGO revealed the Grand Piano (set 21323): a highly-sophisticated and playable concert piano featuring authentic details and Powered Up App.

With a 3662 blocks, the Grand Piano is the biggest LEGO Ideas set created by number of elements. It can be played in either a “user play” toy piano mode (where hitting any key produces the next note in a selected song) or in an “auto-play” mode (where the piano moves randomized keys while the app produces music like a player piano).

The Grand Piano, which measures over 22,5cm high, 30,5cm wide and 35,5cm deep when closed, is another example of LEGO moving into the hobby sets for adults.

I could be wrong but I feel this is what companies like TAMIYA should do to get back in the hearths and wallets of adult hobby fans. At the end LEGO huge success among kids and adults is the demonstration that people are ready to put down their smartphones and build a kit with their hands.

LEGO Design Lead Sam Johnson declared: “Our piano doesn’t have a ‘natural piano’ function where you play the keys as if they were real because that would have been prohibitively complicated to produce as a LEGO set. We’ve created more of a music function that we’ve found people enjoy quite a lot and is similar to the capabilities of other toy pianos.”

LEGO Designer Chee Woon Tze: “It was actually quite a conscious decision that we made it that way. We wanted both kids and adults to be able to make music with it as soon as they are done building it, regardless of their ability to play a real piano. You don’t need to know how too play music with this, all you need to do is press the keys.”

Designed with the intricate elements of a real grand piano, this brand-new set is a fully immersive build. With a clever motor and working keys, when the set is combined with the LEGO Powered Up app, fans can become musical maestros one brick and one note at a time.
